RIDLEY TWP., Pa. (WPVI) -- A man is on the run after allegedly shooting his girlfriend, who then drove herself to a nearby Wawa for help Thursday night.

Action News has learned that the shooting is linked to a barricade situation that ended early Friday morning.

Police have identified the suspect as 36-year-old Kariem Muhammad.

The investigation started around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday when sources say a gunshot victim called 911, saying she had been shot in the back.

The 32-year-old woman was in a car at the time and decided to pull over at the Wawa in the 1900 block of West MacDade Boulevard in Ridley Township.

Chopper 6 was overhead as officers from Ridley and Chester surrounded a white SUV in the parking lot that appeared to have its rear windshield shot out.

The 32-year-old victim was taken to Penn Presbyterian Hospital after telling police she was shot in Chester.

Police say Muhammad and the victim got into an argument. Investigators say he shot at the victim and a witness as they were attempting to drive away from the home on the 200 block of West 21st Street, several miles from the Wawa.

Police and SWAT officers surrounded the home after hearing the victim's story.

"I just seen a bunch of cops fly over there," said Paul Gill, of Woodlyn.

They believed Muhammad was barricaded inside, but he was already gone.

Sources told Action News that there was someone inside of the home, who was originally not cooperating with police, but it was not Muhammad.

The scene in Chester was eventually cleared by 4:30 a.m. on Friday.

Gill watched the response unfold across the street.

"It's horrible around here. It ain't safe. You gotta look over your shoulder all the time, but what can you do?" Gill said. "We need to stop shooting each other. I mean, help each other out more."

Chester police say Muhammad should be considered armed and dangerous. He's facing multiple charges, including attempted homicide.

The victim was treated and released from Penn Presbyterian Hospital.
