PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Speed cameras along Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia are now active, resulting in fines that start at $100 for speeding drivers.

The speed limit is 25 mph along Frankford Avenue, and Friday is the first day the Philadelphia Parking Authority will issue fines if you go 11 mph over the speed limit.

The new cameras are mainly along a 4.5 mile stretch of Frankford Ave. between the 6400 block at Levick Street, and up to the 9900 block of Frankford at Morrell Avenue.

Cameras at 3100 Levick Street and 2100 Robbins Street are also now active.

"I think it's a good thing. It's a safety hazard if people are speeding," said driver Ken Shrive. "The fact that they're up, it's going to keep a lot of collisions down."

We've heard mixed opinions on the dozens of speed cameras already along Roosevelt Blvd. and most of Broad Street, which are two of the busiest roads in the city.

When you add Frankford Ave. to the mix, that makes 80 speed cameras now in Philadelphia, according to the PPA.

The PPA says speeding tickets on the Boulevard have dropped by 93% since the program began in 2020.

Fatal and serious injury crashes have decreased by 21%, and crashes on the Boulevard involving people hit by cars have decreased by 50%.

Tickets start at $100 for anyone going faster than 35 mph.

Fines max out at $150.
