Street named for Philadelphia police officer killed in the line of duty

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A fallen hero in Philadelphia will now be remembered along the same street where she was killed in the line of duty.

The 4700 block of Rising Sun Avenue has been renamed Officer Lauretha A. Vaird Way.

Officer Vaird was killed in the line of duty on January 2, 1996, while responding to a bank robbery.

Vaird's oldest son, who was a teenager when she was killed, spoke at the ceremony on Friday.

He said everyone who drives by this new street sign will see it and remember a life of honor.
