Street photographer highlights Philadelphia first responders through candid portraits

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A street photographer known for spotlighting first responders across the country recently stopped in Philadelphia to capture a different side of police officers, firefighters, and EMTs, focusing on the people behind the uniforms.

Ivan Chertkoev, whose work is shared with millions of followers on Instagram, said the project is intended to recognize those who serve their communities but may not always receive public attention.

"I wanted to show respect and appreciation for people who work hard every day, but often go unnoticed and underappreciated," Chertkoev said. "I think sometimes we forget that behind every uniform is a regular person, just like us."

Chertkoev launched the project at the beginning of the year and has traveled to 35 cities photographing first responders.

During a recent visit to Philadelphia, he took candid portraits of several first responders while they were on duty, often photographing them from a distance before revealing the images.

The portraits are designed to highlight not only the individuals pictured but also their stories of service and commitment to their communities.

"When I give them, say I have something for them, and when they see themselves in the portrait, sometimes they can't believe that somebody takes their pictures," Chertkoev said.

Chertkoev carries a printer with him so he can provide subjects with a physical copy of their portrait.

He also shares the images on Instagram, where the posts have received thousands of likes and comments from people expressing appreciation for first responders.

The project serves as a reminder that those who spend their days helping others can also benefit from a moment of recognition and appreciation.
