PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A taxi driver was shot while picking up a passenger in Philadelphia's Germantown neighborhood on Wednesday, according to police.

It happened just after 12 p.m. on Price Street near Boyer Street.

Police said the man was shot once in the chest and was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The shooting has left neighbors in the area shaken.

"It's scary. It's really scary. It's bad out here," a neighbor said.

The neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said they heard the gunshot but did not immediately realize what had happened.

"All I heard was a pop. I was in the shower, and I assumed it was a firecracker," the neighbor said.

The victim's daughter, who spoke off camera, said her father drives for a private company and was picking up a young passenger when the shooting occurred.

According to the daughter, the passenger asked for change. When her father said he did not have any money, the suspect pulled a gun and shot him once in the chest before fleeing.

Following the shooting, detectives canvassed the neighborhood looking for surveillance video. Investigators also were seen dusting the vehicle for fingerprints.

Neighbors said violent crime is uncommon in the area, making the shooting particularly unsettling.

"In front of my house. Sitting on the porch, anything could happen," a neighbor said.

The investigation remains ongoing.
