Unapologetically Jewish celebration shining light on social media's brightest stars in Old City

OLD CITY (WPVI) -- For the second year in a row, the Unapologetically Jewish celebration is bringing some of the country's best content creators and artists to the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Old City for a friendly little competition.

Philadelphia Jewish Film and Media says the goal is to shine a light on some of social media's brightest Jewish stars during some of the darkest moments.

"We wanted to have Jewish joy, Jewish positivity and Jewish education in a different way on social media and create that space," says Kristen Arter, the Executive Director of Philadelphia Jewish Film and Media.

The culminating event is an awards ceremony called the Mazel Tov Moment. It's a friendly competition where Jewish content creators gather at the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History.

There are nine finalists from all over the nation.

Dia Morgan was a contestant last year. She's this year's emcee.

"I loved it so much. I ended up really diving into my Jewish identity on my Instagram and really started connecting with other Jewish people and encouraging us to not be afraid amongst antisemitism," Morgan says. "We should all stand loud and proud in whatever way that is for you."

There have been two recent incidents involving vandalism at the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History.

"What I love about what's going on this at this event is that on social media right now, especially in the Jewish space, we see so much of the vandalism that you saw on the museum," she says. "It's just such a toxic environment in so many ways. This competition said: 'Talk about being Jewish and just being Jewish.' It's just so cool to see people sharing their unapologetic Jewish joy online, instead of the hatred, the sadness, the violence. It's just pure joy and positivity."

Unapologetically Jewish is Wednesday, September 10th at the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History.

Tickets are free, but you do have to register. You can also vote for the winner ahead of the big Mazel Tov moment.
