PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The U.S. Postal Service is continuing efforts to reduce dog attacks on its workers.
In Philadelphia, officials say the number of incidents has declined in recent years, but more progress is needed.
Philadelphia Postmaster Christina Balliro spoke Wednesday during an event for National Dog Bite Awareness Month.
Last year, there were 20 reported dog attacks involving postal workers in Philadelphia, ranking the city 23rd nationwide, according to USPS data.
Pennsylvania was the 5th highest state with 267 incidents.
Postal officials used the event to share safety tips aimed at helping dog owners protect mail carriers.
They also emphasized that if a carrier feels threatened by an unrestrained dog, the Postal Service has the authority to suspend mail delivery - not only to that address but potentially to the entire block.
