Vacant hotel collapses as crews assessed storm damage in New Jersey

WALL TWP., N.J. (WPVI) -- A vacant hotel in Monmouth County, New Jersey, collapsed on Wednesday as emergency crews were assessing damage from storms earlier this week.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. at the old Economy Inn on the 2000 block of State Highway 35 in Wall Township.

Police said they were called out after reports that a portion of the building's exterior facade had fallen off and additional sections appeared to be unstable.

When officers arrived, they said they saw an active partial collapse of the roof, which they said was from damage sustained during the severe weather.

Video from Wall Twp. police shows the front of the building coming tumbling down.

New Jersey Natural Gas and Jersey Central Power & Light Utility responded to safely secure all services to the location.

Thankfully, no one was hurt.

Township officials and emergency personnel said they have notified the property owner and will continue to monitor the site to ensure the unsafe structure is properly addressed.
