MONTEREY, Calif. -- A rare encounter left a whale-watcher in Monterey County, California in shock when a killer whale attacked a pod of dolphins.

Dolphins swam for their lives after encountering eight to 10 killer whales earlier this week.

This amazing encounter was captured by Sanctuary Cruises, just southwest of Moss Landing Harbor.

Officials said it's rare to see dolphins in Monterey County because they prefer warmer ocean water.

The dolphins started showing up along the Monterey Coast last year.
