Saint Joseph's University students play it safe after armed robberies

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Students at Saint Joseph's University weren't taking any chances Wednesday night in the wake of a series of armed robberies near the campus.

Police said there have been four incidents in the past couple of weeks.

"We're just concerned as the school year starts out here that people living off campus, again, just to pay a little more attention to your environment," said Lt. John Walker with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Police said the series of incidents started on Aug. 26 at the start of the school year for students.

All of the incidents happened near the university, and involved students who live off campus, police said.

"All four jobs occurred between the hours of 8:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. One case is two people walking together, the other three are individuals walking by themselves," said Walker.

Police said the suspects have been described as two to four young adults, between the ages of 14 and 17, riding on bikes and carrying a handgun.

Police said items taken during the armed robberies include cell phones, credit cards and cash.

Following the series of incidents, there is evidence of concern among students.

"It really does take a toll on you. Public safety does keep us safe around here but... it's just kind of scary, it's been all in the past week," said Lauren Eccleston, a senior at the university.

Brittney Lawrence, also a senior, said students are working together to stay safe.

"Normally we would've walked here, but I actually drove here tonight because we weren't sure... so we just took the precaution to drive," said Lawrence.

The university has increased patrols in the area, it said in a statement released Wednesday night.

The school is also encouraging students to continue to take precautions including walking in groups and parking in well-lit areas.

Students can request escorts by calling the public safety office, the university said.
