Former Flyers All-Star Simon Gagne retires from NHL

PHILADELPHIA -- Former Philadelphia Flyers left wing Simon Gagne retired on Tuesday after a 14-year career in the NHL.

Gagne was a four-time All-Star who scored 291 goals and had 310 assists for 601 points. He played 11 seasons with the Flyers, won a Stanley Cup with the Los Angeles Kings in 2012 and also played for Tampa Bay and Boston.

Gagne thanked his trainers and teammates in a statement:

"You inspired me to surpass myself. You made me understand that you need more than talent; it takes sacrifice and discipline and you need to work harder than your rivals. I also wish to thank my fans. Every evening, you energized me and inspired me to perform."

Gagne ranks ninth on the Flyers' all-time list in goals (264) and 10th in points (535) and games played (691). He's fourth in both goals and points among left wings in Philadelphia history. Gagne had 32 goals and 15 assists for 47 points in 90 playoff games with the Flyers.

The 35-year-old Gagne had seven 20-goal seasons, including two with 40-plus goals.
