Big snow piles, clear roads in Cape May Court House

CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE, N.J. (WPVI) -- The Jersey shore was hardest hit by the snowstorm that came through late Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

However, plows and salt trucks made quick work of it, with a little help from the bright sun.

Once the plows did their job, it was up to homeowners to dig themselves out - and it wasn't easy.

The snow was damp and heavy, sticking to shovels.

Suzanne Taylor moved here from Florida six years ago and was told she wouldn't see much snow.

"My neighbors told me 'just bring a broom, you won't need anything else!" she said, but the held up her shovel and added "We get a lot of snow in Cape May, actually.

Ken Johnson thought there wouldn't be much snow when he moved here 13 years ago. Now, the snow is driving him out.

"We're loving our last winter in Cape May. We're moving to Texas," he said.

Shoveling out was a family affair for the Smithsons. The snow was an unwelcome sight after they flew home from Florida on Monday night.

"We flew home in a snowstorm last night, we landed at about 10:30 and here we are. Fortunately, our son had a snow day today, so we're just shoveling out," said Ben Smithson.

There are only 3,600 full-time residents of Cape May, comparted to the summer season when 50,000 roll into town.

Year-rounders like the quite off-season - and when it snows, it's even quieter!

"I love it, I can't get enough of it. I just don't want what New York had," said Lilian Beck. "We got plenty, I'm good."
