NORTH PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- It was just a drill at Temple University, but school officials say it was an important one.

Beginning Thursday at Noon, Temple held its first-ever shelter-in-place drill.

The drill was meant to give Temple students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to practice what actions to take during an environmental emergency.

"Shelter-in-place is about seeking refuge away from unsafe environmental conditions, which can include severe weather events like a tornado or a hazardous materials release like a chemical spill that makes the air unsafe to breathe," director of emergency management Sarah Powell said.

By 12:12, Temple tweeted the drill was complete and everyone could resume normal activity.

The drill was also a test for the university's TUsiren system.
