NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- One person was killed and two others were wounded in an on-campus shooting at Tennessee State University.

The Thursday night shooting was apparently prompted by a dispute over a dice game in an outdoor courtyard, according to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department's verified Twitter account.

The male who died was not enrolled at the school, university spokeswoman Kelli Sharpe said in an e-mail.

The other two wounded were students and were brought to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, Sharpe said. No other injuries were reported and students were escorted safely back to their residence halls.

There was no indication of an active shooter, Tanya Stone, operations supervisor for the Metro Nashville emergency communication center, said early Friday.

The Tennessean newspaper reports police blocked off an entrance to the university and made nonstudents leave the campus.

The incident comes just over a week after three people were wounded by gunfire at an off-campus party across the street from the college.
