NJ track star goes gold at Special Olympics USA Games
OCEAN CITY, New Jersey (WPVI) -- Special Olympics athlete Anthony Conner took home a gold medal, but it's his heart of gold that shined the brightest at the USA Games.
The 35-year-old from Cape May Court House is a two-decade veteran of Special Olympics. But this year was his first opportunity to compete on Team New Jersey in the USA Games.
After a lengthy try-out process, Conner was selected as one of four athletes on the track team, which was led by Jackie Adams.
At the event in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Conner was awarded a gold medal in the 1500 meter race.
During the race, a competitor had fallen down prior to crossing the finish line.
As a result, Conner felt compelled to invite both the 2nd and 3rd place finishers to stand on top of the 1st-place platform with him.
The heartwarming moment was captured on video by Adams.
Special Olympics athletes like Conner are able to utilize the track at Ocean City High School for practice. The city offers many of its facilities to Special Olympics for a variety of uses.
