Hundreds of students return to school in West Philadelphia

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- More than 700 students were welcomed back to school Thursday morning in West Philadelphia.

Kids in grades kindergarten through 5th filed into the West Philadelphia Achievement Charter Elementary School.

The school focuses on the arts and technology.

The charter's founder is a finalist for a "Best in Education" contest.

The award is given to the schools that have overcome challenges while inspiring its students to achieve academic excellence.
