WILMINGTON (WPVI) -- Crews jumped into action to rescue a man who was stranded in the Brandywine River in Wilmington.

It happened shortly before 8:00 Thursday night on the edge of Brandywine Falls near Rockford Park.

Authorities say the man, believed to be in his 20s, was wading in the water along the river's edge when he got swept in by the current.

The man tried to swim back to shore but only managed to make it to a rock at the center of the river.

Rescue crews used an inflatable boat to bring the man to safety. He was taken to Wilmington Hospital for symptoms of hypothermia.
