The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health will study mussels, fish, bugs and the chemistry of the rivers water and sediment.
Among other things, volunteers with catch fish in Ford City, Freeport and Springdale along the Allegheny River so the fish can be tested for mercury and other pollutants.
The scientists also want to study how sewage might be putting estrogen, antibiotics and other materials into the river.
