Taxi, PECO rates take a leap

PHILADELPHIA - June 1, 2008 First up is PECO. As of today the utility has hiked the price of natural gas about 20 percent. PECO says monthly bills will increase by more than $23 on average.

Customers will see a bit of a break in the spring and summer months, when typically less natural gas is used.

Starting Monday morning you'll have to pay more to take a taxi in Philadelphia. The base daytime rate is increasing 50 cents, from $2.70 to $3.20, and the fare per mile is going up 20 cents as well, to $2.30.

Also, cab drivers will charge an extra dollar for each extra passenger.

We're likely to see more rate hikes because of increasing gas prices. It's now more than 4-dollars a gallon for gasoline, across much of the Delaware Valley.

AAA says the average price in the Philadelphia area tonight is $3.97. That's a new record high.
