State police in Monroe County say lightning apparently struck a group of five swimmers at a state park, killing a teenager and sending two other members of the group to the hospital.

Police say the group was at Gouldsboro Beach at Gouldsboro State Park in Coolbaugh Township just before 6 p.m. Saturday. They say two 17-year-old males and a 24-year-old man were in the water while two juvenile females were out of the water - but all were knocked to the ground.

One of the 17-year-old males was pronounced dead at the scene by Monroe County Deputy Coroner Robert Allen. The other youth and the man were taken to CMC Hospital in Scranton with injuries said not to be life-threatening.

Police are withholding the names of the victims until their relatives can be notified.
