Some of the fireworks landed on an uninhabited marsh island in the bay between Wildwood Crest and Shawcrest, igniting the marshes in flames.
The fire burned for several hours as firefighters had a difficult time reaching the island. Several boats from neighboring fire departments were called to the scene including the Forest Fire Service to assist fighting the blaze.
Firefighters were afraid of the embers that were carrying over to the local communities.
Lower Township Police tell Action News that the fire department is still putting out hot spots.
No homes were damaged, and luckily, no injuries were reported.
