Motorcycle accident, medic struck by car

NEW CASTLE, Del. - December 21, 2008 The accident occurred around 9:30 p.m.

Police say Edward Reiss, 30, of New Castle, was riding his 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on Route 13 approaching School Lane when he lost control and crashed.

A Delaware City EMS Unit arrived on the scene and 30-year-old EMS worker Michelle Smith ran over to Reiss to render aid.

At this same time, a police officer arrived on the scene. The officer said he was stepping out of his patrol car when he looked back and saw a 2004 BMW 760 traveling southbound on Route 13, approaching the scene at a high rate of speed. The officer got back into his cruiser in fear of being struck, when the BMW sideswiped his car.

The BMW lost control and ended up striking Smith and Reiss who were on the ground.

The BMW came to rest on the shoulder of the road. Another vehicle then pulled up to the BMW. The driver of the BMW got into the second car which fled the scene.

Reiss and Smith were both taken to Christiana Hospital with serious injuries. They were last listed in stable condition.

The operator of the BMW has not been identified and the crash remains under investigation.
