Elderly man beaten in Delaware Co.

UPPER DARBY, Pa. - March 9, 2009 - It happened around 3:30 p.m. Monday in the unit block of Kent Road in Upper Darby.

The victim, 74-year-old George Mirzayan of 32 Kent Road was rushed to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition.

Mirzayan is suffering from numerous facial fractures.

HUP says he has since been treated and released.

The suspect, 23-year-old Amir Sheikh of 31 Kent Road, is in custody. Sheikh is said to be a student and a cab driver.

"Words were exchanged. We're still investigating what happened in that particular incident," said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. "But, the 23-year-old proceeds to pummel, to beat about the face and body the victim, who is 74-years-old."

The beating was apparently sparked over a parking spot. Spaces are at a premium on the street.

Sheikh's cousin says the two have had disagreements in the past.

But, Koulla Mouratidou, a longtime neighbor who knows both men, is baffled by the crime.

"If there was bad blood between those two gentlemen, we did not know. But, you never know," said Mouratidou.

Sheikh is going to be charged with aggravated assault, two counts of simple assault, and one count of recklessly endangering another person.
