Coatesville names new police chief

COATESVILLE, Pa. (AP) - April 14, 2009 Coatesville City Council named 21-year police department veteran Julius Canale on Monday night to replace Chief William Matthews. Matthews had recommended him as a successor.

Canale had served as acting chief prior to Matthews' appointment two years ago and again since Matthews departed last month. The 43-year-old lieutenant is a Coatesville Area Senior High School graduate.

Matthews announced his resignation in March as police contended with stresses including dealing with a string of arsons plaguing the city. The department has also been hit with the departure of many experienced officers, and has been under sharp criticism from Chester County District Attorney Joseph Carroll.
