Bus consumed by flames on NE Extension

POCONOS - May 14, 2009 The incident took place at 2:48 a.m. on the ramp to the Pocono interchange.

State Police tell Action News that the bus driver, identified as Tommy Riddle from Downingtown, noticed smoke coming from the rear of the bus while traveling north on the extension. Riddle pulled the bus over while exiting at Pocono, then got out of the bus to inspect the rear of the bus when it caught fire.

The driver safely evacuated the bus of its 38 passengers before the bus became completely engulfed.

The fire was put out and the passengers were put on another Krapf's bus and returned to their journey.

The passengers were on a trip for the Philadelphia Prison Society, visiting friends and relatives in prison around the state.

There's no word on what caused the fire.
