Feds reviewing Bay Area energy project

The Energy Department says a project to mine clean energy from the earth is on hold until more study is done to determine whether the drilling could produce earthquakes.Bay Area startup AltaRock Energy Inc. plans to fracture bedrock on federal land in Anderson Springs and extract geothermal energy.

AltaRock's vice president of operations Jim Turner said his company has been asked to provide additional information. Turner said he does not think it will delay fracturing work, expected in the summer.

The Energy Department said it will not fund any facturing work until the study is completed.
