State police sued over meningitis death

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - September 9, 2009

Linda Brautigam filed the $27.5 million suit in federal court Friday.

Her 48-year-old husband, Chaim, died of bacterial meningitis on March 17, 2008, while she was traveling.

The suit says that was three days after Trooper Kirk Perkins responded to the house, but left after finding her husband face-down on a bedroom floor.

The suit says Perkins went to the home after the Brautigams' 7-year-old son was found wandering in search of a supermarket.

Brautigam says state police later acknowledged Perkins should have sought medical attention for her husband.

A state police spokesman says he cannot comment on the suit or say what action was taken against Perkins.
