Parenting Perspective: Balance in the New Year

January 7, 2010

Certainly 2nd grade is important, but I believe it should be just part of the climate that creates a sense of balance. Indeed many experts say there should be more to a child's life than teaching, learning and the reaction of parents to a child's academic performance.

Studies have shown the relationship between a well-balanced schedule of non-academic activities and a child's success in school. The more balanced his or her life is beyond the classroom - the better they seem to do in the classroom. What's more, the pressure we as parents apply to get good grades, can create a cycle of academic disappointment.

Whether it's sports, karate, performing arts - even family time, for Nicholas 2010 will be the year where it will be emphasized with as much importance as school work. They are all meaningful activities, and parents can often feel overwhelmed with trying to get their child to practice or rehearsal. I know, I've been there. But regardless of how much of a hassle it can be, it's crucial I remember its importance to my son's development.

When I was a kid, I could only partake in extracurricular activities if my grades were good. And during my teen years it used to create a power struggle between my parents and me. Some experts say it can also foster animosity as the child views his life as nothing more than getting an education.

In 2010 I plan to work with my son's teacher in pursuing a well-balanced lifestyle. Such an emphasis will hopefully develop the whole child, and perhaps make my son more open to the responsibilities of schooling.
