Local woman mourns family from Haiti

WEST PHILADELPHIA - January 15, 2010

Through a translator, Mollie told Action News a house collapsed killing three of those relatives. She has not heard about the conditions of the rest of her family in Haiti.

Joseph's mother says they have up to 40 family members who lived in Port-au-Prince and south of the capital along the earthquake fault line. All remain unaccounted for.

Joseph's mother, through a translator, says there are no words to describe what she's feeling because all the life and force has left her.

As cell phone service in Haiti is restored, the sense of dread in a small church like this one only grows.

"As news is coming in to confirm everyone's worst fears, you are going to see more and more people crying and totally devastated," church member, Gilda Jean-Louis of West Philadelphia, said.

Everyone in the prayer service is in the same boat.

"We would like to do everything just to get there to see what is going on, but there is nothing we can do; we are just paralyzed sitting in one place," member Mary Desravines said.

While Mollie Joseph and her family grieve, others like Marie Pierre wait for word on their loved ones. Pierre broke down talking about her family in Haiti, whose whereabouts are unknown.

For this congregation at 61st and Vine, there will be more days ahead of worry, grief, and prayer.
