Camden side streets still under snow

CAMDEN, N.J. - February 16, 2010 Henry Ivey spent the day digging out trying to make his road look less like an ice rink.

Up and down Camden's side streets, last week's snowfall is still wreaking havoc, piles of snow and mounds of ice make navigating them nearly impossible.

Even four wheel drive trucks had trouble. On Division Street, those who have bothered to unbury their cars leave a chair to claim their snow swept spots. No one wants to shovel twice. What they want, they say, is the city to plow, even once.

"Basically all the streets is like this. You slide around. You get stuck. They didn't do nothing," said Erick Benson.

The city says it is doing its best trying to keep up but people aren't buying it. One woman so angry she stopped an Action News crew as they were driving to vent her frustration.

"Is ridiculous, I can't ride down the street, no nothing. It's really ridiculous."

She wasn't alone. On nearly every side street residents complained about their condition. And with one look, you can see why. Morton Street looks more like the moon the surface so uneven cars had to weave from one side to the other to get from one end to the other.

The view from inside a car shows icy ruts so solid and so deep you can't help but to bounce all over the place, which could do some real damage to cars that try to pass through.

Camden's mayor was unavailable Tuesday night and the city's Department of Public Works did not return calls.
