The Erie Zoo is displaying the first litter of North American river otters ever born at the facility.

Zoo officials say the five pups were born Jan. 9, but they were only put on display this week. The pups' eyes just opened.

Zoo president Scott Mitchell says the pups were born to Mimi, one of two adult female otters at the zoo. They were fathered by a male otter named Scooter.

The gender of the pups has yet to be determined. Zoo officials aren't naming the animals yet because they say it's too hard to tell them apart.

The pups will likely stay at the Erie Zoo this year before they're transferred to other zoos to participate in breeding programs.
