Allentown mom charged after dresser kills son

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - March 11, 2010 Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania have charged a woman with involuntary manslaughter for allegedly leaving her 14-month-old son locked in a bedroom for more than two hours, leading to his death by a toppled dresser.

Prosecutors allege that 26-year-old Marianella Torres-Matos left the toddler and his 2-year-old sister in the Allentown apartment Nov. 19 while she ran errands, including going with a friend to visit an inmate at Lehigh County Prison.

Authorities say when she checked on the children, she found her son under the 160-pound dresser. The child was revived but later died at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest.

Torres-Matos was also charged with misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of children. A listed number for her could not be found and authorities said she had no current address; it was unclear whether she had an attorney.
