Pa. church faces pastry catastrophe

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - March 23, 2010

Now The Reverend Ron Hari leads a small fellowship at Hungarian Evangelical Reformed Church in Bethlehem.

When the old church started falling apart, the 33 member congregation could simply not afford the repair cost.

So, The Reverend Hari started making and selling his strudel from the church basement as a local fundraiser.

Well, this preacher makes a mean strudel and the word started getting around.

"Superb, I have purchased......doesn't compare," said Geneva Quigg of Bethlehem.

"I love it... and I think so," said Frank Kralovits of Bethlehem.

Next thing you know a local newspaper did a feature and the orders have been pouring in ever since.

The Reverend admits he's having a hard time keeping up with demand.

He's also having a hard time dealing with angry customers who don't get their strudel in a timely fashion.

"Blah blah blah... expletives, do you?" said The Rev. Hari.

But he says it's all worth it because, in a time when many other small ethnic churches end up having to close their doors, this house of worship is undergoing tens of thousands of dollars worth of renovation.

All thanks to a pastor who has mastered a dying culinary art  form.

If you would like to get your hands on some of The Rev. Hari's strudel, send him an email or a postcard to this address.

However, please be patient. The list is very long!
