Stolen medic vehicle crashes, 81-year-old killed

VINELAND, N.J. - March 30, 2010

According to police, 46-year-old Michael Jones stole an SUV from the parking lot of the Franklinville Fire Company in Franklin Township around 8:20 a.m. Tuesday. That SUV is used by paramedics at Underwood Memorial Hospital.

Jones allegedly drove through several municipalities with local and state police in pursuit.

The stolen medic vehicle kept going into Vineland where the SUV crashed into a minivan at East Chestnut and Holmes Avenue.

The impact killed 81-year-old Alfred Costantino of Vineland. Police say Costantino lived in the neighborhood where the crash happened and he was the only person inside the vehicle.

Police say they broke off the chase before the accident.

Jones, who lives on Commerce Street in Bridgeton, was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released to police custody.

Jones has been charged with multiple counts of homicide and assault in connection with the fatal crash. His bail was set at $750,000 cash.

Investigators say Jones has a long police record, including multiple charges of fleeing police.
