Teachers overpaid, school wants money back

WYOMISSING, Pa. - July 12, 2010 "We asked the leadership come back and tell us how you think you want to work this out and that's we're in the process right now," said Krem.

But that process may not be a simple one. Some teachers already spent the money and others will now get bumped into a higher tax bracket as a result of this mistake. That means when they file for their 2010 returns they'll be taxed on money they will have already given back to the district.

Teachers' union spokesperson Curt Minich also says coming up with an agreeable solution is being hampered by the fact that its summertime and many of the people affected are on vacation.

"Right now I have no particular comment at this time we trust that everything will be worked out once everyone sits down and talks about it," said Minich.

District officials tell Action News they will likely set up a year- long repayment plan either by deducting a percentage of future pay checks or having the teachers write monthly checks to the district until the full amount is returned.

But as of right now, the district is open to any new ideas.

"We're going to do what the staff feels is in their best interests. We're not going to tell them anything I would rather be collaborative and cooperate with them," said Krem.
