PA Fair Care: program for the uninsured

August 3, 2010 There's good news for Pennsylvanians who can't get health insurance because of a pre-existing condition. The state has a new program called "PA Fair Care". It's an element of the new federal health care law.

The Pennsylvania Insurance Department will start taking applications for this new program starting Wednesday and right now it has enough initial funding to serve 3500 people.

Subsidized premiums are $283.20 a month plus co-pays. Applicants can enroll on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program provides an option for people who need coverage until 2014, when insurers will be barred from denying coverage or charging sick people more.

PA Fair Care is administered through a contract with Highmark Blue Shield.
