DA: Montco man targeted in online scam

HATFIELD, Pa. - May 23, 2011

Maxwell Gdogboade was arrested last week and charged with attempted theft by deception.

Investigators from the Montgomery County District Attorney's office say they were first contacted when the victim, a 64-year-old man from Hatfield, Pa., was attempting to withdraw $46,000 from a bank account to give to a woman he met through an online dating service.

The victim said the woman had asked him for money to go to a movie shoot in Africa. The victim then believed the woman would move to the United States and be with him after she was finished shooting the movie.

Police say that woman did not exist.

Hatfield Detectives say they reviewed the emails and learned they were originating from and being sent back to IP addresses in Nigeria.

The victim told detectives that he was supposed to withdraw $46,000 and meet a money courier at the Philadelphia International Airport.

Police were waiting at the airport and arrested Gdogboade, who was allegedly posing as the courier.
