Driver sought in Yeadon 7-Eleven hit and run

PHILADELPHIA - June 21, 2011

UPDATE: Car involved in Yeadon hit-and-run found

Police have received a lot of tip calls on the alleged driver and they now know who she is.

She is identified as 32-year-old Wilaisha Rankins. She is said to live in the Upper Darby area. Police say attempts to reach her have been unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the passenger, identified as Tylese Pitts, has told authorities they were out drinking at a bar shortly before the car crash.

"She was cooperative with the investigation and we don't anticipate filing any charges against the passenger," Yeadon Police Detective Sergeant David Splain said.

Surveillance cameras captured the dramatic footage back on June 9th at around 10:30 p.m. when police say a car driven by Rankins is shown crashing into a man and pushing him into the Yeadon 7-Eleven store on Church Lane.

Moments later, the video shows Pitts stepping out of the car and leaving.

Ultimately, a male passenger and the driver also fled with no one rendering aid to the man who was run over.

Action News reporter Dann Cuellar asked Pitts what she was thinking.

"What was going through my mind? I was in shock. I don't know what was going through my mind," Pitts said.

Dann followed up by asking, "Was she not looking at what was going on?"

Pitts replied to Dann, "I don't know what she was doing. I'm worried about me, officer. I got to go."

She was then asked how she could leave the scene without glancing towards the victim.

To that she said, "I was in shock into the whole situation; I've never been through anything like this in my entire life. I was in total shock."

Action News' John Rawlins spoke to the victim, Gejea Ejeta, earlier in the day.

Ejeta, a native of Ethiopia, is still recovering from the accident with an injured leg.

With the driver still on the run, police had some of advice for her.

"Turn yourself in. We're not going to go away. We want to hear her side of the story and we intend on completing the full investigation," Splain said.

Police are looking for both Wilaisha Rankins and her vehicle, described as a 2007 Dodge Caliber with Pennsylvania license plate HSY-4777.

Anyone with information is being asked to call Yeadon police.
