Sparks ignite smokey scrap metal fire in Del.

WILMINGTON, Del. - June 22, 2011

It happened at the American Scrap Company, located on the 4100 block of New Castle Avenue.

Investigators say, workers were cutting a car apart when sparks set a large pile of scrap on fire.

The pile of scrap, towering 50-60 feet into the air, billowed smoke into the city of Wilmington, prompting many calls into the fire department for smoke in the area.

Firefighting efforts were hindered by a lack of hydrants in that area. It took crews three hours to gain control of the flames.

There are no reports of injuries.
