UPDATE: Help comes to youth football team

OVERBROOK - June 27, 2011 Aftering seeing the above report, Congressman Bob Brady contacted Action News Monday night.

He says he will raise the money to replace everything that was stolen from a storage trailer over the weekend.

Philadelphia police are still trying to find the thieves.

"They took everything," Sonny Moore told Action News earlier in the day.

When the president of the Overbrook Monarchs says "everything", he means it.

Sometime over the weekend, thieves broke into the trailer for the Monarchs' football organization and stole the helmets, the uniforms, the pads, first down markers and old trophies.

They even stole the cooking equipment for the concession stands, including deep-fryers and coolers.

Most everything the Monarchs owned was donated. The monetary value of the stolen items exceeds $20,000.

"Training camp, official day of training camp is August 1st and right now we're basically wiped out," said Moore.

"We put a lot in to have this for these kids. Our time, our hearts, and for someone to just come and take everything is just heartbreaking," said the Monarchs' Athletic Director Bill Taylor.

What makes this story even more tragic is that the Monarchs organization is about more than just football. It's true, the 75-pound team went undefeated last year and won the division championship. But 80% of the kids on that team are also listed on their school's honor roll.

13-year-old Jameer Killian, a star player for the Monarchs, finds it hard to believe that there may not be a football season this year.

"Playing on this team made me feel like I belonged here. I feel like I have a family," he said.

If you have any information about this robbery, you're asked to please call Philadelphia Police.

Meantime, if you are interested in helping, along with Congressman Brady, the Monarchs salvage their upcoming season, here is the team's contact information:
