Winter time is still a great time to visit the Zoo

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - January 5, 2012

America's oldest; it embraces its history while keeping exhibits up-to-date.

As much as possible, the zoo presents animals in settings like their natural habitat. In recent months, the zoo has had a number of births.

Visit now and you can enjoy baby animals while they're still in the "cute" stage. Lucha the jaguar cub was born last summer but is still growing.

Right nearby, two young snow leopards will delight you with their kitten-like playfulness. Wait until June and they literally will be different animals.

Other zoo denizens just fit best this time of year, like the penguins and the polar bears. Most days, if you dress for the season, you can roam the grounds in comfort. If you do need a warm-up, there are many indoor spaces where you can discover other animals; the bird house has everything from familiar ducks to tropical species and ot's summery warm in there.

With smaller crowds visiting this time of year, the staff can give you more attention. They can spend more time discussing animals of interest and answering your questions. These attractions are covered by your regular admission.

Don't forget that 6abc partners with the zoo to operate the Channel 6 Zooballoon, operating when conditions permit. That's an extra-cost option that your family will long remember.

One more thing, zoo admission is discounted this time of year. Except for weather emergencies, the Philadelphia Zoo is open every day except Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
