Pa. school won't release details of TB tests

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - January 10, 2012

Chambersburg Area School District Assistant Superintendent Cathy Dusman says health privacy laws prevent the school from releasing the number of positive or negative results returned by the tests.

Officials began the tests Friday after the state notified district officials of a confirmed case of tuberculosis at the school.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that usually attacks the lungs. It is spread through the air and can be fatal if not treated properly.

Dusman tells the Public Opinion of Chambersburg a positive test with a normal chest X-ray means a person has latent TB, which isn't contagious and is easily treated.
