Telephone scam targets grandparents in Newark

NEWARK, Del. - January 27, 2012

Victims of "The Grandparent Scam" admit to receiving a phone call from someone pretending to be their grandchild.

The caller even uses the real name of the victim's relative.

During the conversation, the caller claims to be in need of money for bail, a hospital visit, car trouble or some other emergency.

The victims are then told to wire the money to a specific location as soon as possible.

Authorities say that anyone receiving these calls should immediately hang up the phone.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of this scam, please contact your local police.
