Spring offers many deals for travel

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - April 3, 2012

Except for spring break week if you can get away now, you'll find resorts less crowded and prices off from peak season.

We visited Best Rates Travel in Audubon, New Jersey, where owner/agent Annelie Miller told us you will find most prices up from a year ago.

Plane fare is higher because fuel costs and up. Airlines are making fewer flights so seats book up faster.

A recent change in federal law means you'll know the exact price of your ticket when you book, rather than being drawn in by a low up-front price then getting hit with surcharges.

Travel agents do charge to book an airline ticket but many travelers find the service with the few dollars it costs. Most other services are free to you, because the agent is compensated by the providers.

Agents constantly receive last-minute deals from tour operators, so you're likely to find a bargain. Also note that travel agents take frequent trips, hosted by properties they end up booking. So they can tell you if a candidate resort you've heard about is suitable.

For example, Miller has a client who loves tennis. She just came back from a hotel he was thinking about that had only one court. She was able to reserve him accommodations in a neighboring property that's more tennis-friendly.

When you visit a travel agent, be up-front about your likes and dislikes. Your agent will know how to build you a vacation that plays to your interests. You might also tell your agent about budget concerns, because one of the daily bargains they get via fax or e-mail might be just right for you.

These almost never snow up online or in newspaper ads but agents are contacted all the time. Agents also know the local dining scene, passport requirements, currency needs, and other details you might overlook.

Again, their expertise generally costs you nothing. We found Annelie Miller online at Best Rates Travel. The agency is located at 273-A West Kings Highway in Audubon, New Jersey. They have clientele nationwide and their toll-free number is 1-877-991-3900.
