WWII Vet goes back to high school at 86

MASSILLON, Ohio - February 23, 2013

86-year-old James Grammer dropped out of the 9th grade so he could go to work and help his parents support his 6 siblings.

A few years later, in 1945, he was drafted and fought with the U.S. Army in World War II.

Last year, Grammer decided it was time to do what he should have done a long time ago.

"I got a grandson and a great-granddaughter that didn't get their diplomas from high school, and I thought I might inspire them to go back to school and come here and get their GED," said Grammer.

"We learned more from him than in any history book," said Vicki Whiting, Program Coordinator.

He didn't just earn an education, Grammer also picked up a new girlfriend. His tutor Anna had also lost her spouse, and the two started spending more time together.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

James says he always knew that educated men have the advantage on the dating scene.
