Philly mob soldier gets 11 years for racketeering

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - July 16, 2013

They describe the 43-year-old Canalichio as a "made" member of Philadelphia's La Cosa Nostra, and say he collected debts as part of the group's gambling and loansharking activities.

Canalichio's lawyer, Margaret Grasso, calls his crimes non-violent, and says he hopes to return to life with his wife and four daughters in Turnersville, N.J.

His sentencing Tuesday comes after mob underboss Joseph "Mousie" Massimino was sentenced last week to more than 15 years after being convicted of the same racketeering charge.

Accused boss Joseph "Uncle Joe" Ligambi is scheduled for an October retrial after the jury deadlocked on that main count in his case.
