Hundreds of Philadelphia teenagers lined up for a job fair in hopes of landing summer employment.

WEST PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- It may have been a cold rainy night, but that didn't stop hundreds of teenagers like Sabriah Wise from lining up for a chance at a summer job

"I just want to learn how to pay for things on my own and be successful," said Wise.

"I never thought about doing something like this on my own - it might be a fun opportunity," said Anthony Pollard.

Philadelphia's Parks and Recreation hosted the job fair at the Christy Rec Center in West Philadelphia where 2,500 jobs from pool work to camps are up for grabs.

"I like to help kids so this is something I would like to do," said Danerrah Brown.

"It was wonderful when I pulled up and I saw the line outside. It lets us know the mayor is on point when he's saying 'We need to make sure there's 10,000 jobs for our young people,'" said Susan Slawson, Philadelphia Parks and Rec.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter recently announced plans to expand the city's summer job program. Supporters say it's important

"This is an alternative to hanging out during the summer, on the streets, doing nothing - you don't have to get in trouble," said

There was such a huge response that everyone couldn't fit into the same room.

In one room, attendees learned about what jobs were available, what age they need to be and the skills they'll learn.

Then in the next room, they were given an instructional sheet on how to actually apply.

"Lifeguard is the highest paying job so that's what I'm kind of aiming for," said Rashan Young.

Young is 18 years old and a senior in high school.

"I need to get some money up for college," said Young.

If hired, this would be his first job. As the oldest of four children, he hopes to use some of his earnings to pitch in around the house.

For anyone ages 14 and up looking for summer work, there will be another job fair on Saturday at the Lawncrest Recreation Center located at 6000 Rising Sun Avenue from 12 noon - 2:00 p.m.
