PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A woman was killed on Tuesday after she was struck by a U-Haul driver who allegedly fled a crash scene in Philadelphia, according to police.
The incident started with a minor collision around 4:30 p.m. at Kensington and Allegheny avenues.
Officials say the drivers both got out of their vehicles, but then the U-Haul driver got back in the truck and fled the scene towards the 1800 block of East Cambria Street in Kensington.
"After making that left turn onto Cambria, it appears the U-Haul driver lost control of the U-Haul and jumped the curb struck a pedestrian," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. "It appears she was walking on the sidewalk when she was struck."
Officials say the U-Haul broke through a fence before it ultimately came to a rest after crashing into the side of a home. Luckily, no one inside was hurt.
A witness nearby was walking on the sidewalk when she heard a loud screech.
"It was absolutely terrifying. I don't think I've ever experienced that or seen anything like that before. I felt the ground shake when he hit the building," recalled Marissa Floyd.
Police say thanks to witnesses of the first accident, they flagged down 24th district officers who apprehended the 28-year-old driver of the U-Haul after a two-block foot chase
Police said the victim was a 40 to 50-year-old woman. Her name has not been released.
Action News has also learned the passenger of the U-Haul was taken into custody.
