Vandals steal vases from tombstones

She visited a Bucks County cemetery to remember her murdered son, only to find that he had been victimized again.

"It's appalling. It's despicable," said Dawn Sweeney, who is still mourning the brutal murder of her son Jason nearly five years ago.

She was bringing flowers and a Christmas tree to her son's grave yesterday when she found it had been vandalized. The $300 bronze vase was stolen from his tombstone.

Jason Sweeney's grisly murder shocked Philadelphia. A 15-year-old girl, who he thought was his girlfriend, led the Fishtown teenager into a trap. He was beaten to death and his body mutilated by three boys who he considered friends. They stole money Jason had earned working construction with his dad.

Rosedale Cemetery officials said the vase was one of an estimated 100 stolen from the memorial park in the last week. Jason's vase was ripped off a sturdy chain.

Police believe the thieves sell the vases to unscrupulous scrap metal dealers.

The cemetery operators said they will help the victimized families replace the vases by charging them below costs.
