Tour guides may soon be tested

It's becoming increasingly likely that tour guides in Philadelphia will have to be tested and licensed.

Legislation requiring such licenses was passed out of committee on Wednesday and sent to the full City Council for approval.

The bill's supporters are concerned that tourists are being misled by guides who don't know the region's history. However, some tour operators see the licensing idea as a costly layer of bureaucracy.

If the ordinance is approved, Philadelphia would join a number of cities with similar regulations, including Washington, New Orleans and Charleston, S.C.
